The book does not use the usual "Dot Grid" displays, which can slow down the process of programming. It employs an ingenius method we call "Linear Progression"! Each pattern is shown with the percussion instruments on the left, in a column. Each instrument is followed by a series of whole numbers, i.e. 1,3,5,7,9, etc. These numbers indicate the step or beat in the measure where the instrument is to be placed. Once you get working with it, step-programming becomes a "breeze" - transformed from the tedium of the past into an amazingly fast process! Each Pattern lists the percussion instruments to be used. You select the actual drum sounds you prefer and you may even want to set up several different kits for the same pattern to create interesting and different nuances or completely wild effects! After a couple of minutes practice, you can fly through inputting the patterns! Also, a hidden by-product of the process is that, after you've programmed a few patterns, you begin to get the "feel" and, without realizing it, you begin, amazingly, to "know"the general structure of various styles!
