wickedwatches Store OUTSTANDING HAND MADE SOLID WOODS MANDOLA Arched Canted top and Deep Arched Back GERMAN MASTER INSTRUMENT (Today this instrument would cost in the region of £800) Tuning CGDA often referred to as a Tenor Mandola Ready To Play... newly refretted!.... Please see note at foot of page regarding postal insurance. DESCRIPTION Although there is no label on the inside this mandola is definately German and has all the indications of having been made by one of Germany's master builders, probably from the area of Marknuekirchen in Saxony which was/is considered one of the main centres of quality string instrument building. The shape of the mandola is what the Germans refer to as a "wappen" meaning sheild. Difficult to put an accurate date on it but I would say from around the 1950's. FEATURES The instrument has a very rounded neck, comfortable to hold and easy to play. The instrument has an incredible depth (13cm) making it very loud on the open strings with a good sustain especially on the bass strings. In general it has a very good sound ... very "punchy",good intonation and clear on the frets.... and I get the impression it's not been played for a while and therefore the sound is bound to develope. As you can see from the photos it has a stunning flamed maple back. The hairline cracks on the top are fully repaired and I know that the mandola was recently fully restored and by the highly respected German luthier Thomas Dotzauer. This absolute peach of an instrument is ready to play! DETAILS Front: Is spruce (canted top and slightly arched) with a round sound hole with two further "leaf" sound holes, all the sound holes are fully bound with a white and black binding and this design is repeated around the outside of the mandola. You can see there had been a few hairline cracks and these are now fully repaired and secure. There is a very nice and huge rosewood arm rest fully in tact. Back: I find the deeply arched back quite stunning and an incredible peice of craftsmanship, with eleven individual ribs of flamed maple in a kind of "Japanese sun" effect. There is no damage at all to the back and sides. I'm not quite sure of the side woods, but they are very nice. Neck: The neck I suspect from hard maple, straight with a very nicely designed rosewood fretboard which is fully bound with a white binding and white inlays at 3rd 5th 7th 10th and 12th frets with position markers along the neck at the same frets. Frets are new. Bridge: Looks to be a new replacement, rosewood with a compensated saddle rosewood and in perfect condition. Head/Machine Heads: The very unusual and nicely designed head is in very good condition. I suspect that the machineheads and tuning pegs are new. All in fully working order Strings: All present and look fairly new. Action/Sound: A very good sound, clear and even with no buzzing, very nice to play with a good easy action. I try to give a full, honest and accurate description of all my items. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
