Description

Unique and rare soprano Mossman uke from the 1930's.  The instrument is in good playable condition, but there is a crack on the front about 5 inches long and two cracks on the back, each about 5 inches long.  Cracks are tight. There are various scratches and nicks consistent with age.Finish shows some age spackling, but overall in good condition. I don't know if the bridge pins are original, they were on the uke when I purchased it. Tuners are original.  Frets and fingerboard are in good condition.I believe the case to be original, but I don't know for sure.  It definitely shows wear, the handle is separated, but the hinges and clasps are in good shape and completely functional. George Mossman started the Leilani Hawaiian Cultural Village in 1932, at a time when the Hawaiian culture was suppressed. For example, even at the Kamehameha Schools students were not allowed to speak Hawaiian or dance the hula.  Mossman lived on Lusitana Street in Honolulu, making ukulele’s on the ground floor of his home, selling them on the second floor and housing his family on the third floor. He dreamed of reviving the Hawaiian language and culture. He opened a Hawaiian language school at his home early in 1929. He enrolled 50 kids, of whom only three could speak any Hawaiian. He taught the language by having the children pound poi and prepare food while they learned the Hawaiian words for what they were doing. His daughter, Pualani, danced the hula regularly at the Hawaiian Village. For many years she was the face of Hawaii, as the main model for Matson Lines, the Pan Pacific Press Bureau and the Hawaii Tourist Bureau.  She also appeared in the 1934 movie  "Song of the Islands".From the ‘30’s to the 50’s Mossman’s Village was the only place in Hawaii tourists could attend a Lu’au and see hula danced. His ukulele’s are a tribute to this heroic attempt to revive the Hawaiian culture and language.  International transaction by Paypal only! Cost of international shipping to be calculated depending on destination. I can not ship to Italy. Insurance is required. Cost of insurance depends on the final selling price of the uke, and will be added to the shipping cost at check out. .
