SOLILOQUY ("A Musical Thought"): Rube Bloom; Mills Music Co., New York 1927 I have listed this superb piano work under "rags," only because I'm confident that collector/players on the lookout for fine 20th century piano works will check out my offerings. It is not Ragtime, but it's a work composed by a man who grew up in the Ragtime Era and who was an active presence in the 1920's novelty-jazz piano world. If you don't know of Rube Bloom (1902-1976) and his many piano compositions, you do know of his set of Standard jazz & vocal contributions, including Fools Rush In (1940,) Give Me the Simple Life (1945), and the haunting Maybe You'll Be There (1948.) Each of these songs discloses Bloom's rare sense of harmonic nuance, which make his Soliloquy almost irresistible. On four pages, six systems per page, it is scored in 2/2 "cut' time, in the key of F-major throughout. The memorable "A" theme runs 30 measures, the more challenging "B" theme 18 measures. After a 4-bar Interlude, Mr. Bloom shifts into an often-dissonant third strain that shifts from light intervals in both hands to staccato block chords. Then, the "A" theme is reprised, to a pianissimo conclusion. This is a mint-condition copy of Soliloquy -- probably from publisher's files. It is undamaged in any way, with a strong original spine, and clean cover. Max Morath
