Description

Key of C, comes with a Fingering Chart and a few songs to get you started.  Made in United Kingdom. Boxed with fingering chart. No other whistle can match the original Clarke Penny Whistle's clear, flute-like tone quality. The Clarke Penny Whistle also has a long and fascinating history. In 1843, Robert Clarke a poor farm labourer left his employer. He was a talented amateur musician and played a wooden whistle. He developed the idea of copying his whistle but used tinplate to do so. He made the block in the mouthpiece out of wood which he cut into shape usuing a homemade saw. He decided to mass produce his new style of whistle. Loading his tools and materials onto a handbarrow, he set off with his son on a very long walk from Suffolk to Manchester. On the way, he regularly set up his workshop handbarrow in market places, showing how the whistles were made and selling them. He would also play for the entertainment of the crowds that gathered round. His most popular piece was "Danny Boy". It is said that the whole busy market would stop and listen when he played this piece. The instrument is still made in the United Kingdom of tin-plate with a wooden plug in the mouthpiece. Delicate operations still continue to be done by hand and, most importantly, Robert Clarke's traditional conical bore has been retained to give the instrument its unique sound. In Manchester, Robert Clarke started manufacturing his whistles and, as the years went by, his whistles became world famous under their definitive name - PENNY WHISTLE. The Clarke Pennywhistle Company has been producing penny whistles from the mid-nineteenth century to this very day. Some famous musicians made their start in music with these instruments. In fact, James Galway, the world-renowned flautist, first learnt to play on a Clarke Pennywhistle. No other whistle can match the original Clarke Penny Whistle's clear, flute-like tone quality. Tinwhistle buffs call this sound "chiff" and no other tinwhistle has the same degree of "chiff" as a Clarke. The tone of the instrument is clear and flute-like, but it is also described as "crisp and responsive" by Bill Ochs; and "husky and sensual" by Mary Bergin. All these descriptions add up to "chiff". What Tommy Makem calls, "The great Clarke tone". This is what makes a Clarke Tinwhistle unique. The Tinwhistle is a simple, traditional instrument, ideal for popular and folk music but it is also suitable for a much wider musical repertoire. It is just as good for solo playing as in ensemble with other instruments; and can be played by children, youth or adults alike.Robust and easy to care for, it has a long life. Hear one of these instruments, sound clip.  MP3 This Irish traditional jig is played by Grey Larsen.  To see his recordings and tin whistle instructional books, go to his website.   I sell flutes exclusively so to see more of my flute items, Native American Flutes and accessories go to my ebay store Check, money order, Pay Pal, Visa, MC, or Discover.  E-mail with any questions. walt@flutesOnline.com Thanks.  See my eBay store, flutesOnline for more related items.  Flutes, Bags, Song Books, DVDs and more.
